Property Maintenance

complaint_form2The Code Enforcement Office is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for all calls involving property maintenance violations. A written complaint should be filed, but code officials do investigate all complaints, even telephone calls.

To file a complaint, you may download our online complaint form, fill it out and return it to the Code Enforcement Office. You may also pick up a copy of the form at the office. Complaints should include a complete description of the suspected violation, precise directions to the location and the names (if known) and addresses of those involved.

No anonymous complaints will be accepted. You must provide, at a minimum, your name and phone number in order to file a complaint.

Some common complaints include, but are not limited to: abandoned vehicles on private property, open burning and parking.

For dog complaints, contact the Luzerne County Dog Warden at 570-350-9392.

For high grass and weeds, a notice is given to the property owner. If the grass/weeds are not cut, Hazle Township will take the appropriate steps to correct the violation, with all charges being the responsibility of the property owner.

We ask that residents filing complaints be responsible and willing to testify at any enforcement action. A fee of $250, plus court costs, attorney fees and applicable fines, will be charged to anyone who knowingly makes a false and/or nuisance claim.

Those who violate the township’s code will be prosecuted within the limits provided by state and local laws. Criminal/quasi criminal enforcement penalties will be brought before the district magistrate for Hazle Township and will be assessed along with all other judgments, costs and reasonable attorney fees.

Each day that a violation continues after the property owner has been notified will be considered a separate offense. For every re-inspection required for non-compliance, property owners will be assessed an additional fee of $100 in addition to court costs, attorney fees and fines.

Call the Code Enforcement Office at (570) 455-2030 with questions.
