Garbage Collection

Garbage collection
Up to six garbage bags or cans may be placed for pickup each week. All garbage should be bagged. Please do not put out garbage in paper bags, cardboard boxes or containers smaller than 20 gallons. Residents are responsible for getting their own containers/trash cans.

Hazle Township is separated into five collection zones. Please refer to the zone map on this PDF for which day your garbage and recyclables will be collected.

Recycling
Hazle Township offers curbside recycling. Recyclable items include aluminum and tin cans, glass, plastic, paper and cardboard. Electronics are not picked up in the weekly collection. Residents are responsible for getting their own containers.

Banned items
Tires, car parts, car batteries, gasoline, motor oil, pesticides, oil-based paints, electronics and any other toxic/hazardous materials are prohibited from Hazle Township garbage.

Many auto stores accept used motor oil and batteries.

Latex paint
To dispose of latex paint, let the paint dry in the can. Adding a commercial drying agent or cat litter will help speed up the drying process. After the paint has dried, double-bag the can before placing it in the trash.

Leaf and yard waste collection
Yard waste, including lawn clippings, grass and weeds, will be collected on the same days as garbage and recyclables. Please place yard waste in bags or garbage cans. Tree branches should not exceed 3 inches in diameter. Yard waste and Christmas trees should be put out on your regular trash day. Yard waste must be in bags or cans weighing no more than 40 pounds each.

Construction debris
Home construction or demolition debris may not be disposed of in Hazle Township garbage. If you’re putting on a new roof or remodeling your house, you need to make special arrangements with a waste hauler to remove the debris.

Bulk items
Only one bulk item per household may be placed out each week. This includes items such as sofas, mattresses, other furniture, water heaters, washers and other appliances. The bulk item must be placed out at the curb on your trash pickup day. Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers contain Freon (CFCs). Please remember that by federal law, Freon must be removed from appliances by a licensed professional and the appliance labeled with a sticker. Most appliance dealers and repair shops can remove the Freon. Also, many dealers will take away your old refrigerator when delivering a new one.

Holidays
Trash will not be collected on holidays and collection will be one day late for the rest of that week. Holidays are New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
