The Board is composed of seven volunteer members of the community who are appointed by the Board of Supervisors. The Board meets the first Wednesday of the month. Current members are Lee Ann Kasha; Chairperson, Mary Rajkiewicz, Joseph Galada, Margaret Galada, Kathy Matz, John Rajkiewicz, Jim Darr, Kathy Fogerty. The prime responsibility of this Board is the maintenance, improvement and management of the Hazle Township Community Park. They also sponsor numerous recreational events throughout the year. Some have included Easter egg hunts, Halloween parades and other recreational activities. Funding by a small, yearly allotment from the Township budget, grants, donations and gifts when available, pavilion rentals, sales of snacks, all assist in funding the many opportunities offered by the Recreation Board. All monies are used for activities, equipment and improvements. Please remember this group of dedicated men and women when thinking about recreation. Many other local civic and business groups contribute to add improvements. In 1997, No. 1 Construction Company and members of Carpenters Union Local 76 constructed a handicapped fishing pier. A United States Army tank was acquired, and working with our local veteran’s organizations and civic organizations, this tank was permanently placed and dedicated to our servicemen and servicewomen. New Park additions include additional playground equipment and a swing for handicapped residents. A "Snack Shack" was recently located near the playground. A stage and new pavilion are in progress. A “Day at the Park” is held annually on the second weekend in July. Park and pavilion rentals are available by contacting the Recreation Board at |

| Community Park | Early in 1959, the Community Park Organization established a local park. Its purpose was not to provide only a playground for children but to develop an area, which would be similar to a State Park. It would provide wholesome outdoor-based recreation and activities for the whole family. A one hundred seventy-eight acre tract of land was acquired for the park. It is located in the North-Central part of Hazle Township and is accessible by paved roads. One of the first projects was the construction of the twenty-six acre lake to act as a centerpiece for recreation. Here children dedicated Lake Irene in honor of the late Mrs. Irena Correale on July 4, 1962. The Pennsylvania Fish Commission stocks it with appropriate fish species. Lake Irena is a favored fishing spot for many people and many began angling here as young boys and girls On October 14, 1965, Hazle Township was granted $40,000 in Project 70 funds to purchase the Greater Hazleton Community Park. Many improvements have been made since then. Pavilions were constructed and picnic tables added for family and group use. Trails were improved and added. In 1995 the playground, benches, bike racks, and grills were added and improved. During 1996, the bathrooms were revamped and made handicapped accessible. A fence was also added. The Hazleton Soccer Association approached the Supervisors in 1996 to ask about constructing soccer fields for their growing group. Working with the Supervisors and the Recreation Board these playing fields were constructed during 1997. |
